OUR APPROACH TO BETTER LANDSCAPES

Research that helps landscapes perform better.

At Green & Gray, research and development is a practical part of every landscape decision. We study how a place behaves, test what will work in its climate, and turn those learnings into landscapes that look considered, feel comfortable and remain easier to care for.

Our work connects design with the realities of Bangladesh: intense sun, seasonal rain, dense urban sites, changing water availability and the everyday needs of the people who use a space.

01Site-led studiesEvery decision begins with the place.
02Climate-first choicesPlants and materials are selected for real conditions.

WHAT WE INVESTIGATE

Small discoveries can change the way a landscape works.

Our research is grounded in the details that shape long-term performance. The goal is not novelty for its own sake; it is a clearer, more useful answer for each site.

01

Climate-ready planting

We compare plant behaviour across sun, shade, heat and rain so the planting palette can be beautiful, locally appropriate and more dependable through the seasons.

  • Plant selection and grouping
  • Seasonal colour and texture
  • Low-stress establishment
02

Soil and water performance

Healthy soil and sensible watering are the quiet systems behind a successful landscape. We look at drainage, soil condition and irrigation needs before they become expensive problems.

  • Drainage and water movement
  • Soil improvement strategies
  • Efficient irrigation planning
03

Urban and rooftop spaces

For balconies, terraces and compact plots, we explore lightweight, durable and flexible ways to bring planting into places where every square metre matters.

  • Container and modular planting
  • Wind and heat exposure
  • Privacy without visual weight
04

Materials and build quality

We review how finishes, edging, structures and outdoor furniture age in use, helping clients choose details that remain practical as well as visually calm.

  • Durability and maintenance
  • Material coordination
  • Safe, comfortable detailing
05

Lighting and night use

Good lighting makes a garden feel welcoming after sunset. We consider visibility, atmosphere and energy use together rather than treating lighting as an afterthought.

  • Layered garden lighting
  • Glare and neighbour comfort
  • Night-time movement and safety
06

Maintenance intelligence

We document what needs attention, when it needs attention and why. This turns maintenance from guesswork into a simple rhythm that protects the original design.

  • Care schedules
  • Seasonal review points
  • Early issue detection

FROM OBSERVATION TO APPLICATION

A field-to-garden method.

Research becomes valuable when it can be applied. Our process keeps the loop short: observe the conditions, make a focused design decision, test it in context and refine the result.

01

Observe

Read the site across light, movement, water, soil and use.

02

Design

Translate those observations into a clear, buildable landscape response.

03

Test

Use samples, planting trials and on-site checks to remove avoidable uncertainty.

04

Refine

Capture what we learn and improve the next decision, detail or maintenance step.

WHERE THE WORK SHOWS UP

Research made visible in everyday spaces.

A

Homes and gardens

Planting that feels personal, stays comfortable and supports the way a family actually uses the outdoors.

B

Workplaces and hospitality

Landscape elements that shape arrival, pause, movement and first impression without creating unnecessary upkeep.

C

Balconies and terraces

Compact green rooms designed around exposure, structure, privacy and the practical limits of an elevated site.

A PRACTICAL STANDARD

Better decisions should be easier to live with.

That is the measure we bring to our research. If an idea cannot improve the experience of a place, its resilience or the clarity of its care, it does not belong in the final landscape. We keep learning, documenting and sharing what works so every project can become a stronger starting point for the next one.
